In the face of continuing economic concerns, Discount Wholesalers Inc. is putting particular emphasis on providing its retailer customers with, "Everyday basics and consumable products that their customers need," says Saja Stark, sales manager. That includes food, paper goods, cleaning supplies and health and beauty aids, all at below wholesale pricing. "All of the products are name brands acquired as original cases or shelf pulls," she explains. Of all four of these categories, only the food product pallets do not contain a manifest.

They are packaged in banana boats, each of which typically contains a mix of canned goods, dry goods and other non perishables. "There might be a mix of spaghetti sauce, canned tuna, boxed pasta and other popular products," she explains. "These are all in first quality condition and include new overstocks at a fraction of the wholesale value," she adds. The wholesale price is $13.50 a banana box, and they are sold by pallet or trailer load. A pallet includes 48 boxes, and a trailer load contains 1,152 boxes. "Most retailers double the wholesale," Stark says, "but the retail return can range from 25 to 100 percent above our price to the retailers."

Paper products are manifested and include paper towels, toilet paper, disposable diapers and feminine products, among others. "Original case products are sold by us at 55 percent of the wholesale value," says Stark. "The shelf pulls are 40 percent of wholesale value." The selection of cleaning products also come manifested, and are also all name brands in first quality condition. Health and beauty aids are sold at a fraction of their wholesale value. "It ranges between 35 and 65 percent of wholesale value, depending on the content," Stark says.

Discount Wholesalers receives new shipments daily and updates its website as new deals arrive. Stark suggests that retailers visit the website regularly and also sign up for email alerts. "In fulfilling orders in any one of these four categories," she says, "we include a mix of products so the retailer can fill shelves for a complete department." An HBA order, for example, would include a wide variety of products within that category.

Stark also notes that the company does carry brand name products in many categories, including TVs and other electronics. The products most in demand now, however, among both retailers and their customers are the basics that people always need.
