Brand Names From Continental

Mar 1, 2009

For the past 20 years, Continental Wholesale LLC has been obtaining products from some of the nation's largest retailers, and selling them by the truckload at prices that represent, "Pennies on the wholesale dollar," says Joel Orr, who along with his wife, Kim, owns the company. "We get primarily customer returns, discontinued items, overstocks and overruns," says Orr, who adds, "we have a good supply available and business is exploding. A lot of people are coming into the retail business, and this type of merchandise is very favorable to the consumer, who is looking for good value," he reasons. The products are mostly brand names and cover a full range of categories.

"We work with a lot of companies that carry high quality, high dollar, brand name goods," says Orr. Continental Wholesale sells only by the truckload. Some shipments have a detailed manifold describing the contents and others do not, depending on the source. "There is usually a mix of first quality merchandise and customer returns in every truckload," Orr says. "And we let retailers know about the mix." In addition, Continental gives exclusive, protected territories to its retail buyers.

When Orr first opened his business, "A lot of the big retailers we buy from wouldn't permit us to sell the merchandise within a large radius of their stores. That has changed over time, and now that radius has become significantly smaller, allowing many more retail stores to acquire these goods." Currently, "we're selling a lot of furniture," he says. "Sporting goods are also in demand. Tools always sell well, and electronics is also a top selling category for us," he adds.

Truckloads can contain only products within a particular category, such as furniture or electronics, or it can contain a mix of merchandise categories. The cost of a truckload from Continental Wholesale typically ranges from about $3,500 to $10,000, depending on the retailer it came from and the type of merchandise it contains. "The retail return is at least triple the cost," Orr says. "Our warehouse is open, and we invite buyers to come and look over the products. We get new arrivals all the time."

Photos of loads are shown on the company website. "However, we like to talk with buyers and work with them one on one," Orr says. "That way, we can find out what they want or need and what pricepoints and products match their marketplace," he concludes.
