When Debbie Burks acquired Buy Wise, a wholesale supplier based in Overland Park, KS, in 2000, its product selection was limited to gifts from Guatemala. While these are still very much available, has widened the company's reach significantly.
Products now come from Indonesia, Peru and elsewhere, to not only add to the overall selection, but also bring additional unique product to market and reach a broader customer base. "We now reach beyond gift stores to many different kinds of retailers," Burks said.
Among the newer additions are motion mirrors and lamps, revolving lamps, hand crafted pipes and a wide range of hand crafted jewelry from Peru. "We try to get appealing items that are not available at big box chains," she said, "so our retailer customers can compete with unique product that maintains good margins."
The motion mirrors, fish lamps, waterfall picture and an aquarium fill that bill, and have obtained a following. They're attractive, unusual home décor, and they can also serve as night lights in children's rooms. The waterfall picture includes a soothing sound. Misting lamps are also in the mix. These items come in a wide range of sizes and styles, and wholesale prices begin at $6 a unit.
The jewelry includes earrings, necklaces and matching sets. Wholesale prices range from $2 a unit up to $12 for a set.
These are all in addition to 175 different fragrances of oils and incense, and a large selection of oil burner designs. The minimum order is $100, and can include an assortment of product.
"This allows retailers to obtain a varied assortment and spread their freight costs," Burks reasons. She works with retailers to guide them to individual items that meet the tastes of their clientele, and also fit with their price point requirements.
