Hemp: Not Just For Textiles

Apr 1, 2009

Hemp has been finding its way to store shelves for many years, even without knowing the extensive benefits of such a green profit. Store owners are buying renewable products more and more, as the social consciousness of customers moves more towards personal responsibility for improving their own environment. While stores carried hemp for years as a novelty, only a few realized how ahead of the curve they were.

Hemp has enormous potential to become a major natural resource that can benefit both the economy and the environment. It is capable of producing significant quantities of paper, textiles, building materials, food, medicine, paint, detergent, varnish, oil, ink, and fuels that are, or can be, sold in retail stores everyday. Unlike other crops, hemp can grow in most climates and throughout the world. It is ready for harvesting only 120 days after it is planted. Hemp can grow on almost all land suitable for farming; it requires no pesticides, no herbicides, and only moderate amounts of fertilizer. On an annual basis, one acre of hemp will produce as much fiber as two to three acres of cotton. Hemp fiber is stronger and softer than cotton, lasts twice as long, and will not mildew.

On the same basis, one acre of hemp will produce as much paper as two to four acres of trees. From tissue paper to cardboard, all types of paper products can be produced from hemp. Hemp paper will last hundreds of years without degrading, can be recycled many more times than tree based paper, and requires less toxic chemicals in the manufacturing process.

Fiberboard can be produced using hemp, and is stronger and lighter than wood. Substituting hemp fiberboard for timber would further reduce the need to cut down our forests. It also produces strong, durable and environmentally friendly plastic substitutes. Thousands of products made from petroleum based plastics can be produced from hemp based composites. Hemp seeds are not intoxicating. This seed protein can be used to produce virtually any product made from soybean, as well as be ground into nutritious flour that can be used to produce baked goods such as pasta, cookies, and breads.

A basic fact is that environmentally conscious buyers will buy more from stores selling environmentally friendly products. One of the biggest selling products made from hemp is twines and cords. They are sold in every type of store you can imagine, from C-Stores and Variety Stores to Gift Shops. Twines and rope are some of the most versatile products you could sell in your store.

Hemp Basics is a manufacturer of hemp products that include an extensive line of hemp twines and rope. Many varieties are available, like crafting, dyed, natural and polished twine, as well as cordage and rope. All products are made with hemp fibers, which are characterized by their superior breaking strength, resistance to mold and mildew, and their suitability for many different uses.

Twines and ropes are sold in stores for a variety of utility, craft, garden and home uses. Twines are sold for more indoor uses like macramé, jewelry, crafting, and many art projects. Cords and ropes are also sold in stores for outdoor uses like gardening and binding. They are the perfect product for spring, due to the green value, as well as the versatility of the twines and ropes, and you will always have the buyers coming back for more.
