Changes have taken place at Discount Wholesalers, a supplier of closeouts for more than 12 years. It has recently added staff, expanded its warehouse space at headquarters in Chester Springs, PA, and significantly increased efficiency, according to owner Steve Galiffa. "We now deliver much faster, within 24 to 48 hours of order placement," he says.

Other changes provide the company's retailer customers with important ammunition for weathering any economic difficulties. "We have added a lot of name brand consumables, such as paper goods, including paper towels, toilet paper and facial tissue, as well as children's and adult disposable diapers," Galiffa reports.

"When dollars are tight, sales at discount chains generally remain strong, especially in the area of consumables," Galiffa reasons. "That's why we've also increased our selections of bar soap, household cleaners and detergents, toothpaste and other products that consumers use every day."

The company also offers a full assortment of name brand cosmetics. "We have a tremendous offering of health and beauty aids," he reports. These extend from basics to the more luxury end of the spectrum, which is increasingly popular. That includes body washes, lotions and sprays.

These are all in addition to the company's historically large selections of toys, appliances, home décor and other products. Prices generally range from 50 to 80 percent less than original wholesale prices.

The knowledgeable staff works with retailers to meet differing needs. Staff will help retailers put together orders that contain a variety of quick selling general merchandise in different areas of the country.

On orders of salvage or customer returns, the Discount Wholesalers representative explains the condition of the products on order. "We give as much information as we can," Galiffa says. "We provide pictures and detailed inventories, and our staff describes product assortments."
