Customer Is King At Amglo

Mar 1, 2008

Amglo Inc., located on the web at www.amgloinc.net, is a direct importer and wholesaler of an all encompassing selection of seasonal merchandise. Founded in 1994, the company is a one stop shop in its category. Amglo Inc. is the brainchild of couples, Steven and Pamela Levinson and Michael and Jill Schecter. Two of the four owners departed an importing business that sold similar merchandise, to launch Amglo, Inc. "We started the business to fill a niche, because there were not a lot of reliable sources in this particular area. We are not a jack of all trades. Amglo specializes specifically in seasonal merchandise, and we offer customers a fair price and a good selection," said Michael Schecter, VP.

At Amglo, customers can choose from a wealth of decorative and festive products for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Memorial Day and Fourth of July. Amglo carries roughly 800 items, houses millions of dollars of inventory, and produces three catalogs per year. From year to year, the company's merchandise can change approximately 20 percent.

Amglo, Inc. imports goods from China and Vietnam. In the United States, the company sells to dollar plus stores, garden centers, drug and variety stores and a host of other retailers that carry seasonal merchandise. Amglo exports globally to Columbia, Mexico, Canada, Aruba, Curacao and other locations. "Retail is constantly evolving. First it was the five and dime, then it was dollar stores, and now it is dollar plus stores," said Schecter.

Amglo garners sales through sales reps, the Internet, participating in trade shows and distributing catalogs. The Amglo website was launched a couple of years ago in affiliation with WholesaleCentral.com. "Being associated with WholesaleCentral.com opened a whole new world for Amglo. We gained a network of customers that we probably would not have sold to otherwise," said Schecter. The Amglo website beautifully displays the contents of the company's catalogs.

A steadfast and recurring theme for Amglo is the importance of customer satisfaction. "It is our mission to do the right thing by our customers by always being fair and honest. Amglo's success depends on the success of our customers. If they are successful, we are successful," said Schecter. When it comes to customer service, Schecter offered, "We are always available and you can get us at any time. There is not a lot of red tape for our customers to go through." When asked about Amglo's top three priorities, Schecter simply replied, "Customer satisfaction, customer satisfaction, customer satisfaction." It is not surprising that Schecter attributes Amglo's success to, "Always taking care of our customers."

Amglo has a distinctive edge on the competition because of its tremendous selection of seasonal merchandise. "We literally carry everything but food," said Schecter. Halloween and Thanksgiving are shipped together, and there is an order requirement of $2,000. Christmas is shipped separately and has an order requirement of $3,500. Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Memorial Day and Fourth of July carry a combined minimum order of $2,000. Christmas represents the biggest holiday for Amglo. The products in Amglo's inventory wholesale for 25 cents to six dollars, and the turnaround time for orders is approximately five days.

A large part of Amglo's success can be attributed to its ability to completely fill and ship orders in their entirety. "This is very important to our customers. We purchase and stock goods before they are actually sold, so we always have the necessary inventory on hand," said Schecter. "Ultimately we pride ourselves on the quality of our products, excellent customer service and quick response time," he said.

Schecter offers advice to anyone starting out in business today: "With the economy, it is a different time. To be successful, you must add value for your customer by providing something different that is not offered anywhere else."

Schecter explained how the name Amglo was chosen, "When we started Amglo, light sets were very big. So we thought American Glo, which became Amglo." The company's headquarters are located in historic Philadelphia, PA.
