Top Line Fragrances

Jan 1, 2009

When FragranceNet.com began selling fragrances in 1997, it carried name brand and designer lines, not knock offs or look-alikes. That remains the company's focus, according to Jason Apfel, president, but it extends far beyond perfume and cologne.

Today, FragranceNet.com carries more than 11,000 different stock keeping units of branded perfumes, colognes, gift sets, hair care, skin care, aromatherapy and other health and beauty products. Its buyers range from national chains to small mom and pop stores and pharmacies, "the gamut of retail," Apfel says. As a result, sales have increased between 30 and 40 percent every year.

"Fragrances remain our number one seller," he reports, "with skin care ranking second. We are also seeing significant increases in skin care and hair care for men, and kids fragrances are also increasingly popular." Among the latter are units from Backyardigans and several Barbie and Bratz lines.

There is no minimum order. "It's okay to start with two or three items," Apfel says. The company maintains a vast inventory and ships within 24 hours, and shipping is free. A staff member is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to guide retailers to best sellers in different markets and areas of the country.

More than 95 percent of orders, however, are placed on the company's wholesale website. Buyers can sign up for free, provide their tax ID and receive a password. That gives them access to all products and wholesale pricing, along with daily and weekly specials. "We're currently adding a feature that also lists volume discounts," Apfel says.

"Our selection and range, all under one roof, is our primary benefit," he says, "along with our customer service staff, which is always ready to advise buyers. Top sellers are always changing," Apfel notes.

"Celebrity scents do very well. Other current top sellers are Lovely, from Sarah Jessica Parker, Dolce & Gabbana's Light Blue, Cool Water and Burberry."

"Every brand has a different discount," he explains, "so our pricing varies from as little as five percent to as much as 80 percent off retail. Fragrances have the deepest discount," Apfel adds.
