Jim Wangers, along with everybody’s favorite felonious car executive Jon Z. DeLorean, more or less hatched the original GTO way back when. A few years later, in cahoots with the old Royal Pontiac store, Wangers was totally responsible for the Judge. He even copped gold at a few NHRA national events in the early ’60s in Pontiac Stockers, then became one of the hippest car marketers of all time. In ’66, Wangers’ GeeTO Tiger program was pure schtick, a promotional boil aimed at getting enthusiasts involved on the ground level. Selected individuals at certain dragstrip events would be invited to beat the Tiger (actually one of the Royal crew sweating into his socks beneath a ridiculous striped getup) in a heads-up race with two Goats: one with a black panel, the other with a white panel.

The GeeTO Tigers perform at Indy.

In 1965 and 1966, You could attend an NHRA National event, and if you had a winning ticket, you could actually "RACE" one of the Royal Pontiac "GeeTO Tigers" against the Mystery Tiger in a full 1/4 mile drag race!

| The 1966 GTO was no longer an option on the Pontiac LeMans. It was a model of it's own. The GTO received all new sheet metal and interior for 1966. Mechanically they were the same. The sides of the car were no longer straight. They were given a "Coke bottle" shape. The rear window was recessed into the semi-fastback design. The 1966 GTO could be ordered in three different body styles. The hardtop had no post between the front side and rear side quarter glass. The sport coupe had a pillar or post between these two windows. The convertible was the third body style that the GTO was offered in. The 1966 GTO's set of standard options included; bucket seats, special exterior trim (such as the hood scoop), 335hp 389ci engine (optional Tri-power) with chrome valve covers and air cleaner(s), dual exhausts, and 3-speed manual transmission. |
