A new four-in-one multi tool takes a clever idea and makes it into a must have gift item. Pocket SmartString, by Pocket Workmate LLC, can measure, calculate, level, and illuminate. “It’s a thin calculator that has the ability to electronically measure distances with a string,” says Pocket Workmate owner, Jeff Freed. “You have a button that you can use to toggle between calculator or measurement mode. When it is in measurement mode, when you pull the string out, it reads on the screen the distance the string goes out.”
The product has several features that conventional tape measures only dream about. “It is thin, less than half an inch thick, and you can slip it in your pocket or purse. It can go where you go,” says Freed. “You don’t have to put it on your belt when you only need a real quick measurement. And using a string, you can go around circular objects, or objects that are oblong.” The item may prove invaluable for projects including sewing, crafts, fishing, woodworking, plumbing, and electrical work. “A lot of people like it as a gift item,” says Freed. “Especially for the person who has everything and wants a gadget.”
The company offers a display (a $30 value) to customers who buy 200 units. That’s also the minimum order, so pretty much all customers get one. The display has a promotional board on top, and holds 12 to 14 units, so, “Retailers can put it at the register, at the point of sale,” according to Freed. “Our suggested retail is $12.95 to $19.95. People have found that $19.95 does work for this product, but if you want a quick sell, you can sell it for $12.95 easily. The special wholesale price is $6.25 through the month of August.”
