Low Cost Biodegradable Bags

Oct 1, 2009

OMNIPAK offers polyethylene shopping bags that rank #4 on the recycling code, and contain an additive that ensures they degrade completely from a landfill within 18 months. They provide retailers with an inexpensive solution to the growing demand for environmentally friendly bags. They look like the same plastic bags currently on the market, and there is no upcharge for the biodegradable advantage. Furthermore, they are less expensive than paper bags, and are durable and waterproof.

They bags are available in plain white or customized with the retailer's name. There are nine sizes, ranging from the smallest at 6.25 by 9.25 inches, to the largest at 20 by 4 by 30 inches. The mid size bags have handles. The stock, white bags are sold by the case lot, which varies according to size. The smallest, for example, come in a case of 1,000 bags for a total cost of $8.52. The largest come in a case of 250 for a total price of $24.43. Volume discounts are available.

To obtain custom printed bags, retailers either send camera ready artwork or images that the Ominipak art department will configure into a design. There is a one time plate charge, which varies according to design, but averages about $50 per color. These are offered in the same caseload quantities as the plain bags, but the minimum order is larger. For example, the minimum order for the smallest bag is 10,000 bags, and the minimum for the largest is 3,000 bags. Minimums for the sizes in between are typically 5,000 bags.
