Reto Lingenhag founded Education 2000 Inc. in 1988, with an assortment of travel DVDs. Ever since, he has been adding new masters and converting them to DVDs. The company now carries approximately 50,000 titles, covering a broad spectrum of subjects. In movie titles alone, the available selection includes drama, western, kung fu, religious, horror and other popular categories. The company has nine Amos & Andy titles, for example.

Among special interest DVDs is a selection of instructional titles that include horsemanship training, belly dancing, fencing, basic sign language, napkin folding and eight different exercise videos. There is even a DVD that illustrates instruction in photo techniques for establishing a business of taking wedding photos.

"There are also family films, old time movie favorites, music, and all sports, including snow skiing," says Lingenhag. "These are in addition to our extensive selection of travel DVDs." The travel titles cover countries in Europe, Africa, North America, South and Central America, the Caribbean and Asia. While some show scenes of entire countries, such as Peru, Italy, Russia, Brazil and Germany, others focus specifically on states, such as California, Florida and New York, and on particular cities, such as Paris, Rome, New York, etc.

Education 2000 has a minimum order of 50 DVDs that includes two units each of 25 different titles. "The wholesale cost is $2.50 a unit, and that includes shipping," Lingenhag says. The suggested retail price is $4.50 to $5.

"Typically, we talk with a retailer and discuss what kind of store and market the company serves, and then create a pre mixed assortment that will sell well in that environment," he explains. A retailer can, for example, get just religious, or just drama, or travel, or just sports and fitness. "We can even narrow the assortment down to just Western or Family Films," he says. "Or a retailer can get a mix of titles in several different themes."
