Target Opens New Stores

Apr 1, 2009

While many retailers are cutting back on expansion plans and even closing many existing stores, Target has announced plans to open 27 new units, including its first in Hawaii. The new stores include 21 general merchandise Targets and six full grocery SuperTargets.

The 21 new general merchandise stores feature a blend of everyday essentials, including household products, electronics, clothing, an assortment of food and seasonal merchandise. These stores offer amenities such as a Starbucks, Target Café, Target Pharmacy and Target Photo. They also feature new and improved design layouts such as larger fitting rooms. The pharmacy in these new locations is positioned at the front of the store. Each general merchandise store employs between 150 and 250, and is approximately 128,000 square feet in size.

The cities earmarked for new Target general merchandise units include: Rogers, AK; Santa Clarita, CA; Pensacola, FL; Bethlehem, GA; Honolulu and Kapolei, HI; Council Bluffs, IA; Las Vegas, NV; Paramus, NJ; Cincinnati, Lebanon and Reynoldsburg, OH; Broken Arrow, OK; Exton and Philadelphia, PA; Memphis, TN; Houston, San Antonio and San Marcos, TX; Midlothian, VA, and Sun Prairie, WI.

The six new SuperTarget stores offer everything found in a general merchandise store, but also include amenities such as a full grocery selection, fresh produce, bakery and deli. Target balances a wide range of national brands with its own Target private label brands, including Sutton & Dodge Angus beef, Archer Farms, Choxie, and Market Pantry. Each SuperTarget store employs between 200 and 300 team members and is approximately 186,000 square feet in size. Cities in which a new SuperTarget will open are: Kissimmee, FL; Canton, GA; Hillside, IL; Pflugerville, Allen and Lewisville, TX.

With the opening of these new units, Target Corp., based in Minneapolis, will have 1,699 stores in 49 states and 34 distribution centers. It employs approximately 350,000 worldwide. In addition to its general merchandise and food discount stores, it operates a fully integrated online business, and a credit card segment that offers branded proprietary and Visa credit card products.
